Wozniacki Actually Won Something!
It's a miracle! Caroline Wozniacki has finally won a major title on the WTA tour. No it's not a Grand Slam, but she was able to defeat Venus Williams to win the WTA Finals! The Dane only 89 minutes to defeat the world number 5, 6-4 6-4.
This is a great achievement for Wozniacki because, just a year ago, this seemed very unlikely. Wozniacki had sustained a pretty serious ankle injury that led to a drop within the rankings, down to 74 to be exact. Just like Federer, she extended her recovery time to 10 weeks ad seemed to work wonders for her. "I strongly believe everything happens for a reason and maybe I wouldn't be here if that (injury) wouldn't have happened," she told reporters after her 6-4, 6-4 win.
Williams was denied her 50th career triumph and has now been the runner up in three major tournaments this past year, WTA Finals, Australian Open and Wimbledon. Even though she lost, she will remain the World Number 5 at the end of the year rankings. It is also impressive that this was Venus Williams' first WTA Finals tournament since 2009.
That is something that I have applauded the Williams sisters for. The Williams sisters realized that they do not need to play every tournament in order to rise up the rankings. The fact that Venus has not played a Finals tournament in that long really shows that playing non Grand Slams do not necessarily matter but allows players more time to recover in order play in the Grand Slams.
Going back to Wozniacki, she has finally won a major title and its about time too. She needs to start playing more up to par with the younger players on the circuit now. She is 27, while that is still a good age to compete, and needs to understand that Svitolina, Halep and Muguruza are not even 25 and are starting to dominate the WTA without Serena present.
