Report Card: WTA Top 10

Look, we all know that this year has been a weird one. Nothing was normal, tennis was not normal. BUT, we did get some tennis at the beginning and end of the year. That's why we are doing "Report Cards" for each Top 10 player on the Women's Tour.

#10: Aryna Sabalenka -> A-

You can't tell me winning three titles in one year has not been a successful year (Doha, Qatar, Ostrava). The reason why I haven't given her an A is because of her results at a major. She has yet to make that BIG breakthrough that everyone in the tennis media world has been waiting for.

#9: Kiki Bertens -> B+

While still winning a title and making two Round of 16's in two grand slams, she did not have as many consistent results in the smaller tournaments as she did in the majors. The most notorious moment of her year was cramping at Roland Garros and Sara Errani making fun of her for it.

#8: Petra Kvitova -> B

For making $1.5 million and not even winning a title in 2020, Kvitova did really well from a "I made a BUTT LOAD of cash". From a performance standpoint, she went 20-8 and didn't win a title. She went deep in both grand slams (Round of 16 or better) and made multiple semi-finals in lower-level tournaments.

#7 Bianca Andreescu -> C

I don't want to grade too harshly here. She has been set back with multiple injuries and yet still managed to stay within the Top 10. Does that say more about the ranking system or the players around her?

#6 Karolina Pliskova -> B

Yes, she is ranked higher than Kvitova but definitely deserves the same grade. She made one final, won the title, then I felt like she was not the same for the rest of the year. PLUS, until Pliskova can prove to the world she can win a major, I think she is a bit overrated.

#5 Elina Svitolina -> B+

For the third straight year (since 2017), she has been ranked inside the Top 10. As the highest-ranked Ukrainian player, she has inspired a younger generation like Zavatska, Koystuk, and others to rise in the rankings. In this hindered 2020, she still posted a 19-9 record with 2 titles.

#4 Sofia Kenin -> A

I don't think you could have a better year than Sofia Kenin. Two grand slam finals, one GS title (Australian Open), 24 wins and 9 losses, AND over $4 million in prize money. Kenin made her mark on a year that looked very bleak for most players. She might be the American resurgence that comes after Serena retires. Fingers crossed.

#3 Naomi Osaka -> A

Let's see: A new signature Nike clothing line, and another Grand Slam title at the US Open. While she was battling some injuries and was limiting her playing time due to COVID-19, she still made the final of the Western and Southern Open which lead to her second US Open title.

#2 Simona Halep -> A-

Halep one of the best records in 2020... 23 wins and only 3 LOSES. Winning 3 singles in Italy, Czech Republic, and Dubai. The only reason why I did not give her a solid A was because she did not win a major, that's all! Her run at the Italian Open was a combination of luck and unreal skill. Beating the likes of Yastremska, Putinseva, Muguruza, and Pliskova (even though 2 of these wins were retirements).

#1 Ash Barty - B

Before opting out of the season and deciding to take her talents to the golf course, Ash Barty only played 14 matches and won 11 of those. Winning a title in Adelaide and then making the Semifinals of her home town Grand Slam, were the highlights of Barty's 2020.
